Today’s Prompt: Think about an event you’ve attended and loved. Your hometown’s annual fair. That life-changing music festival. A conference that shifted your worldview. Imagine you’re told it will be cancelled forever or taken over by an evil corporate force.
How does that make you feel?
Every time I go to Underground Bookstore for a book signing, I always have such a wonderful time. I meet readers just like me who fell in love with characters that appeared to come to life in our imaginations. I always manage to connect with other writers and find more encouragement than I could ever imagine. These book signings have allowed me to be connected to a host of noteworthy writers through a great online book club called Building Relationships Around Books. Underground is a community bookstore and it reminds me of The Shop Around the Corner from the movie “You’ve Got Mail”. If a Fox Books store showed up and tried to take over Underground, I’d be really upset. Underground is about the community. It brings events to the store that are centered around the people who live there. I don’t believe an entity like a corporate bookstore would be able to bring the same energy to the neighborhood. I am sure they have tried to come in. I like that it’s a gathering place for the people. The corporation would be all about the bottom dollar. It wouldn’t feel like the neighborhood and it would suck balls. It’s unfortunate that the people have few places to go as it is. Making this one disappear would cut off an artery of the heart of the community.
