Today’s Prompt: You stumble upon a random letter on the path. You read it. It affects you deeply, and you wish it could be returned to the person to which it’s addressed. Write a story about this encounter.
I decided to walk out of the house with no particular distance in mind. My aimless walk led me to the light rail station and I ended up waiting for the train headed downtown. The train arrived at the 12 & I station and I got off the train. I started walking towards midtown. I let my eyes wander around my surroundings. I walked from street to street. I paused at different Victorian homes and wondered about the people who first lived there. As I am walking along the sidewalk, I stop briefly to take some pictures. An old tree catches my eye. The branches hang in such a way that it appears like a person. I chuckle to myself and think about the trees in “The Lord of the Rings”. I look at the entwined roots and notice what appears to be a dirty piece of paper. At first, I ignore it but I am drawn to look a bit closer. I noticed fluid handwriting on an envelope. I free the envelope from beneath one of roots. It has been weathered by the elements. As I hold in my hand, I ponder putting it right back where I found it. I decide if it was something for me I would want to receive it. I make the decision to make sure it gets to the intended receiver. I take it with me and continue on my adventure now with purpose.
