Women in Literature

I have learned during my stint in academia that I just don’t like reading 18th and 19th century American or British literature.  I can hear the boos now but it is not for me.  Yes I know I am an English major and I am suppose to like this but I have my reason.  The primary reason is the treatment of women during these periods.  Women were treated as second class citizens.  They lacked self identity and worth.  I don’t like being flooded mentally with this kind of rhetoric. Hopefully in the coming semesters there will be more thought provoking courses. Until then I soldier on.
